Removing Interior - Heater Bits and Bobs...

Just curious, wouldnt do it just now, but maybe in a while...remove the interior bits you know like the heater bits and the center console and respray then silver.

How hard? Would i just spray over them with the silver spray paint and leave it a while to dry, and then add like laqure or stuff?

I aint into the re-spraying stuff...

Dis-assembly I cant comment on but spray painting bits for the mk1 was doddle - a gentle sand and several layers of silver *plus laquer* and you'll be sorted.

I think we even have a how to on interior painting!?

No idea how to remove the interior of the Mk2 but it can;t be that hard going by how easy it is to do the Mk1!

As for spraying, you need 4 things!

Primer - whatever colour you want (I used Grey)
Silver Paint
Lacquer
Some fine wet and dry.

All I did was take everything out the car, washed with hot soapy water, dried then transferred to the garage for spraying! :)

2 light coats of primer, 2 or 3 light coats of paint (allowing to become tacky not dry between coats) allow to dry and then as many layers of lacquer as you want. I did 3 which gave an alright finish.

Be very careful you don'r spray too much on any part. Use very light coats for all 3 steps, particularly the lacquer.

It really is easy although I've probably made it sound dead complicated! :lol: And don;t worry, i was like you before I did my interior...hadn't done anything like it in the past!

Yeh sounds easy, whats the primer for mate? Lol! Now all i need to know is how to get the things off!

its fairly easy.........main thing to remember, TAKE YOUR TIME

the mk2 is pretty simple to take apart, the main bolts holding the centre console in are under the ask tray above the cup holders. you need to unscrew the feet heater panel aswell theres another few down there, i had to remove the handbrake section aswell to get the whole console out.

wash it down with sopay water or preferably some kind of alcohol.

use very thin sand paper i think its 2000, sand down the surface this make the primer hold much more effectively,spray a layer of primer let t dry, spray another layer let that dry, sand it down very lightly again, then 1 more coat of primer, i used grey aswell.

this should leave you with a smooth finish to paint, apply 3 coats of paint, then 3 coats of laquer.

aslong as you take your time, it aint a 1 day thing should really take you about a week if done properly.

the primer is just to give the paint something to stick to mate well thats what its for as far as i'm aware

It does provide a good base for the colour too - rather than painting on a dulled surface and not getting as bright/solid a colour 8)

Cheers people. Would i get primer out of halfords or whatever? I'll possibly attempt this sometime soon.

Yup, I got mine from halfords!

At the time they were doing 3 cans for the price of 2, so essentially you are getting a free lacquer if you buy primer and paint!

No need to spend a week doing it though! I have heard this said in the past, but I'd have only thought this was the case if you are putting on loads of layers of lacquer! I just left mine over night and then back in the car they went!

Yeh i wouldnt leave it a week, i would leave it for 2 days max to dry out etc. Thanks ill attempt this when i get the cash, lol!

Nice sounds good, when i get my seats retrimmed in black and red i am considering doing some of the interior (door handles speedo enclosure etc) scilla red to match the car, looks like a not all too complicated job though - might attempt it when i got some spare time over the festive period.
